How to make viral campaigns

It’s hard to make a viral campaign that works. But metromind had it figure it out quite nicely this weekend. They took an event from last week that had the potential to become viral. A movie clip feautering a famous singer swearing. They acted quickly and transformed it in clip promoting some art galleys and projects.

The initial clip has about 20.000 250.000 views on youtube and theirs has 10.000 in just 2 days. So great timing, with the right characters and the right product do make a great viral.

Later edit: As Adrian is saying in the comments the initial video had a little bit more comments. :) Still great work and i am sure you will get there in the next couple of days.

  1. Tudor, thanks for the kind words but we’ll see the true potential of our viral only in the next few days.

And the original clip had more than 250.000 views in only one day, it was the 5th most viewed on youtube that day. So with our 10.000 views we are far away.:)

  2. Well , as it seems , not everyone got the message and some people rushed to the conclusion it’s all about one or another trying to suck some money out of it. http://www.piticu.ro/2008/12/06/adi-despot-si-in-reluare/index.html
I mean , let’s not forget the target of a viral. 250K views of the original video turns into 1xK views of the viral which results into 1x donation.
Put it like this : you have website selling a product , you get 250k visits on the frontpage , out of which 100k hit the buy now button but finally only 10 decide to buy. IMHO , that’s quite a poor conversion rate. That is exactly why I started raising questions at past events.
You see , I think in ROmania users are like .. global stumblers. You can indeed reach a large amount of audience but what about the value of the audience?

  3. @VVladescu in my opinion viral videos are more about generating awareness than selling products. Piticu is referring to something else in that post ;)

And you calculus could be right for some industries but it is not a general thing to take into consideration.

  4. My point exactly. figures may or may not be relevant in this particular case but following reactions in the blogosphere easily led me to the idea that most of the people became aware more that there are unqualified journalists out there then the whole idea of the campaign.
And by “comercial” I don’t think piticu was talking about how cute the girl is :)
